What does flattening a PDF actually do?

Will flattening turn my text into an image?
No. Page text stays selectable and searchable. Only the form fields are merged into the page.
Can I remove comments and highlights while flattening?
Yes. Turn on 'Also remove comments and highlights' to delete sticky notes, stamps, drawings and highlight marks. They are removed, not printed onto the page, and links keep working.
Does flattening remove JavaScript from a PDF?
Yes. Document scripts, page actions and form-field scripts are removed, and the result tells you how many were found.
Does flattening make a PDF completely non-editable?
It locks the form answers, but someone with a PDF editor could still change the page content. To control who can open it, add a password with Protect PDF.
Will flattening break a digital signature?
Most likely, yes. A signature field is a form field, so flattening turns it into plain content and the signature can no longer be verified. Flatten before signing, not after.
Does flattening remove hidden metadata like the author name?
No, document details are left as they are. Use Remove metadata to see and strip the author, software and dates.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is processed inside your browser on your own phone or computer. Nothing is sent to a server, so it is safe for Aadhaar, PAN, bank statements and other private documents.
